Balraj Sahni (born as Yudhishthir Sahni on 01 May 1913, in Rawalpindi, Punjab, British India (present-day Punjab, Pakistan) is a film actor and writer. Balraj Sahni worked in more than 100+ movies. Balraj is had one brother Bhisham Sahni. Bhisham Sahni was Author, playwright, academic, actor, social activist and he was born on 08 August 1915 - died 11 July 2003 (aged 87). Balraj is born into a Hindu family. Balraj married Damayanti Sahni in 1936 then Damayanti died in 1947. Later Balraj married Santosh Chandhok in 1949. Balraj Sahni had 3 children including actor Parikshit Sahni and Shabnam Sahni. Balraj is mainly known for his work in movies like Dharti Ke Lal (1946), Do Bigha Zameen (1953), Chhoti Bahen (1959), Kabuliwala (1961), and Garam Hawa (1973). Balraj completed his school studies at Government College University (Lahore), Punjab, British India. Then he completed a master's degree in English Literature from Lahore. He also completed a Bachelor's degree in Hindi. Balraj Sahni worked in his family business then he also worked as an English and Hindi teacher. He also collaborated with Mahatma Gandhi for a year in 1938. Then he went to England and worked as BBC-London's Hindi service as a radio announcer. In 1943 he returned to India. Then he started working as a theater actor. Later he got the opportunity in movies. He debuted in Bollywood movies with Insaaf in 1946. In 1977 he did a role in his last movie Jallian Wala Bagh. On 13 April 1973, Balraj Sahni died due to massive cardiac arrest. During his death, Balraj was depressed due to the untimely death of his young daughter, Shabnam. "Punjabi Kala Kender", founded in 1973 at Bombay by Balraj Sahni, gives away the annual "Balraj Sahni Award", and also the "All India Artists Association".
As a honour to Balraj Sahini work Balraj was added in 2013 stamp of India.
