Aditya Roy Kapur (born on 16 November 1985) is an Indian film actor who works in Hindi films. He is well known for his performances in the 2013 films Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, both of which rank among the highest-grossing Bollywood films. Kapur was born in Mumbai on 16 November 1985 to an Indian Punjabi Hindu father, Kumud Roy Kapur, and Salome Aaron, an Indian Jew. Aditya grandfather, Raghupat Roy Kapur, was a film producer. Aditya is the youngest of the three siblings- his eldest brother, Siddharth Roy Kapur, was the Chief Executive Officer of UTV Motion Pictures and is married to the actress, Vidya Balan. His 2nd elder brother, Kunaal Roy Kapur, is also an actor. Aditya is maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruby Aaron, were qualified dance teachers who introduced the Sama dance to India. He did his schooling from G. D. Somani Memorial School, in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, where all his brother-sister studied and his mother directed school plays. Subsequently, he graduated from St. Xavier's College, connected to the University of Mumbai. Aditya is not done any training in acting, though he has taken dance lessons and also diction classes to improve his Hindi accent. According to Aditya he "had no burning ambition to become an actor," and was content being a VJ, until he was called to audition for London Dreams. During his school years, he wanted to be a cricketer but he quit cricket coaching classes after the sixth standard.
Aditya Roy Kapur started his career as a VJ on music channel Channel V India, where his comic timing and "unique style of hosting" made him a hit. He worked in a show "Pakao" for Channel V, and also hosted the hugely popular, 'India's hottest' show with VJ, Bruna Abdullah. He exited the show in 2008. In 2009, Kapur made his acting debut with the Vipul Shah-directed musical comedy London Dreams, in which he featured alongside Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin. Kapur played the supporting role of Wasim Khan, a Muslim hailing from Pakistan. On the release, the film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised the film's soundtrack, and his performance met with negative reviews. Despite these reactions, London Dream failed to earn profits at both domestic and overseas box office with grossing of ₹410 million (US$5.7 million) against its production budget of ₹500 million (US$7.0 million). In 2010, Kapur reteamed with Shah for the science fiction romantic comedy Action Replayy, in which he played the son of a couple who has hatred towards each other (played by Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai). The film was not a box office success because of a mixed critical reception. In the same year, Kapur played Omar Siddiqui, an aspiring magician who wants training of the job from a former magician (now a quadriplegic), in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ensemble romantic saga Guzaarish, co-starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. Though Guzaarish performed poorly at the box office, Kapur's performance as well the film garnered positive reviews from critics. His upcoming films are Malang, Ludo, and Sadak 2.
